This year we are proud to announce that the Green Gown Awards will be coming to Leicester.

Our Ceremony Host will be Mike Barry. Mike is Director of Sustainable Business at Marks & Spencer. He was part of the small team that in 2007 developed and delivered the company’s ground breaking Plan A; a 100 point, five year plan to address a wide range of environmental and social issues.

Timings for the evening

6.30pm  - Registration and drinks reception will take place
7.10pm  - Dinner followed by the Awards presentation
11.00pm - DJ/Bar until 1.00am.
This event is black tie.

Directions to the venue

The Awards will take place at The Athena, Queen Street, Leicester, LE1 1QD

Athena is located in the Cultural Quarter of Leicester and is a 6 minute walk from Leicester railway station. Click here for further directions.

The Athena is a landmark building situated within the cultural quarter of the city centre. Originally designed in 1936 by Robert Arthur Bullivant as an Odeon Cinema, the venue represented one of the largest, most extravagant buildings within the region comprising of simply one screen seating over 3000 guests. It was then subdivided into 4 screens in the 60s and remained closed throughout much of the 90s.

The building has now been restored to its former glory, and Athena retains its original art deco splendour.

We have worked closely with our partners, University of Leicester and De Montfort University, to showcase the very best of Leicester.

The Green Gown Awards black-tie ceremony brings together the leaders, drivers and thinkers of sustainability initiatives within the tertiary education sector. Show your support for and get inspiration from the finalists by being a part of the most prestigious recognition of best practice within the education sector.

Enjoy the evening with your peers and fellow finalists and be present when all the winners and highly commended entries are announced. It could be you and your chance to shine!

Our sustainability ethos

Over the past months, we have worked closely with our partners - the venue, the Soil Association and University of Leicester and De Montfort University - to deliver an event in line with the EAUC’s Sustainability Policy.

We are proud to announce that this year's menu has been awarded the prestigious Soil Association's "Gold" Food for Life Catering Mark guaranteeing a menu that includes fresh, local, seasonal produce from the UK and incorporating 68% of organic spend ingredients.

This year we are pleased to work with volunteer students from both universities to helping us with not only creating the table decorations but also guest registration at the Awards Ceremony. The hours used creating the table decorations go towards the student HEAR award - which formally recognises 25 hours of environmental volunteering alongside the students' degree certificates.

We encourage delegates to take public transport to/from the venue wherever possible as the venue is a 6 minutes walk from Leicester train station. If delegates must travel by car we recommend to use the EAUC Car Share scheme. Details can be found at www.eauccarshare.org.uk.

We only print the Finalists’ Brochure with Guest Directory and the menu – with recognised environmentally-friendly printing techniques and 100% recycled paper. All other elements are communicated electronically.

We are working with our suppliers to re-use and recycle materials where possible.

We are working with the venue to use local suppliers.
