Why enter the Green Gown Awards?

The Awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of environmental best practice within the further and higher education sectors. The Awards provide the sector with benchmarks for excellence and are respected by Government, funding councils, senior management, academics and students.

Reward your sustainability journey

Working on sustainability projects in your institution is common practice these days but how do you inspire and motivate your team, management and students to do more? Applying for a Green Gown Award not only motivates those involved but it inspires others in the sector to do more and opens the doors to new opportunities:

Take a look at the categories and see where you think your project or initiative could be a winner. If you're not sure, give us a call and we can advise you. Don't forget, the Green Gown Awards are free to enter and there's no limit to the number of entries you can make providing your project meets the category criteria. Winning an Award will bring huge awareness and positive PR to not only your institution as a whole but also to the profile of sustainability within it.

Good to know

It is the applicant's responsibility to submit under the appropriate category. The Awards organisers will not move entries between categories even if they feel a different category is more appropriate, unless in exceptional circumstances.

International Green Gown Awards

The Green Gown Awards are run regionally in the UK and Ireland and Australasia, as well as internationally. Winners from each of the regions are automatically entered into the International Green Gown Awards and will go head-to-head with the rest of the world for the coveted International Green Gown Awards. The International Green Gown Awards are supported by UN Environment. Find out more

Who can enter?

All categories are open to all post-16 educational institutions - further or higher education institutions, work-based or adult and community learning providers - in the UK and Ireland.

Applications are also encouraged from third parties such as catering suppliers, waste companies, transport providers, accommodation providers, architects etc. Third party organisations may enter on behalf on an institution, but an institution employee must approve the application. The Award will be made to the institution and not to the third party organisation. When filling out the application form, please state how the partnership should be named in the communication, if selected, as a Finalist.

We Need Your Help

A strong ethos of the Green Gown Awards is that they are free for institutions to enter but we do ask for a suggested donation of £150 per application to help us to continue running the Green Gown Awards - you can make this donation here. If you are unable to use the donation site, please contact us for an invoice here.  We truly appreciate any donation you can make, no matter how small.

All donations will go towards the Green Gown Awards programme. We thank you for your support so we can continue to celebrate sustainability excellence in higher and further education.
