Carbon sequestration for net zero emission and climate smart agriculture technologies in vision of climate action 2030

Climate action is crucial to tackling climate disasters and for survival of humanity on the globe. The initiatives for climate action were taken by MNS-University of Agriculture, Multan-Pakistan since instituting to reduce greenhouse gasses (GHGs) emission from agricultural system to limit the global temperature to 1.5°C. Climate extremes happened frequently during 2022 and has prominent examples in Pakistan where heatwaves, drought, and erratic and intense rainfall happened in a single year. Keeping in mind the climatic related challenges the University already started working on to ensure net zero emissions, particularly from the agriculture sector as the being main agriculture university in South Punjab-Pakistan.

Climate smart adaption technologies and carbon sequestration strategies have been developed to reduce GHGs emission and improve the resource use efficiency (RUE) by precisely utilisation of the resources like the fertilizer and tillage practices in agriculture.

The university has also developed early warning and early action systems accompanied with agro-advisory services which are region and crop specific to save the agriculture from climatic extreme conditions. 

Top 3 Learnings

  1. To involve additional stakeholders as financial partners for industry and community investment early.
  2. Focus on both vertical and horizontal collaboration levels with the addition of multi stakeholder forums at local and national levels when working on climate action where multiple risks are involved.
  3. To ensure the sustainability of the project, there should be a clear way forward added and manged before the start of the project.
