Virtual Peel Park: Using digital tools to create inclusive natural environments or outdoor spaces

The COVID pandemic and lockdowns caused increased engagement with outdoor spaces, and to a digital revolution which led to novel technologies, such as Virtual Reality (VR), being used more widely and with more confidence by the public. This has allowed some educators to provide a richer and more inclusive learning experiences to all students. The ongoing Virtual Peel Park (VPP) project harnesses these opportunities and enables Salford students and the local community to get to know and meaningfully engage with their local environment.

During two co-creation events, a virtual version of the park and surrounding area has been digitally visualised. It is now hosted online, open to the Salford students, staff, and the public. VPP, as well as other VR-related projects we have been involved in, also provide students with opportunities to boost their employability by gaining new skills and volunteering experience, while providing value-for-money and reduced carbon emissions for the University.
