Nurturing climate concern through learning, sharing, application and empowerment

Climate concern is a valid response to the climate crisis, and as educators, we must support students who experience distress while learning about the challenges ahead. This project acknowledges the role of emotions in climate education and our responses to it. Through three approaches, we promote the application of knowledge and recognition of climate concern.

Our connected (and intentionally diverse) projects include 'Climate, Conversations and Cake (the 3C's)', 'Reading for the Climate', and 'Learning with Sustainability Professionals'. By co-producing these projects with students and staff, we foster a community of active learners, empowering students as agents of change and creating inclusive learning environments.

Our focus is on student leadership cultivates resilience and professional skills, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility among students.

Top 3 Learnings

1. We listened to and prioritised students’ emotional reactions to learning about the climate emergency.
2. We connected students with academic and professional services within UWE so that learning could be applied.
3. We co-produced three different projects to engage and empower students to learn and act on climate emergency.
